Coaching

Introduction

The Coaching sessions, new this season, are intended to help improve dinghy sailing skills in a developing environment and, thereby, raise confidence levels. Hopefully, this will lead to more enjoyment and higher levels of participation in Club events. Many Club members, particularly recent trainees and those who have not sailed for some time, avoid helming in Club races because they feel too inexperienced or too "rusty". Whether you feel confident or not, join in and get the most out of these Coaching sessions. They are open to all members.

Coaching is not part of the Club's formal RYA training. However, these sessions will enable trainees and novices to consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired through formal training.

Each session is likely to be aimed at covering one or more specific topics. This may change on the day based on the participants and the sailing conditions. Individuals will work at an appropriate level to ensure they get the most benefit. The possibility of people trying different roles in a variety of different boats to develop additional skills and perspectives will add to the value and the enjoyment of these sessions. To find out what topics are to be covered at the next Coaching session, simply go to the page for that day in the Coaching Programme.

An external coach will be available to help with some of the sessions. Others will be run by suitably experienced/qualified Club members. Each session will have a briefing followed by supervised sailing on the water, then end with a quick debriefing.

The overall programme will cover a broad range of aspects of sailing. The ten Coaching sessions are deliberately scheduled in a mixed pattern. Four are in place of Saturday races, four are in place of Sunday races, and two are combined with slightly later than usual Saturday Practice Sailing sessions.

If you intend attending any of the Coaching sessions, it would help enormously if you book via WebCollect (see below) in advance. If you forget to book, don't let that stop you turning up on the day.
