Club and RYA

What is the RYA?

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the national body for all forms of boating including dinghy and yacht racing and cruising, motor cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, canal and river boat cruising, and personal watercraft. Their postal address is RYA House, Ensign Way, Hamble, Hants, SO31 4YA. For more details, go to the RYA Website.

Affiliation to the RYA

RYA Affiliated Club

Seafarers Sailing Club is affiliated to the RYA. Why?

As the National Governing Body for boating, the RYA works on behalf of the sport, recreational boaters and all its affiliates. It protects our recreational boating interests by:

  • Providing a robust articulate and intelligent voice to represent recreational boating on all relevant aspects of legislation and policy. This ensures that legislators, regulators and other authorities understand and take account of recreational boating activity.
  • Seeking to influence in order to remain a self-regulated activity where the preferred approach of taking personal responsibility and 'education not legislation' prevails.
  • Resisting legislation or red tape that it believes to be disproportionate, ineffective or unenforceable, or will place an unnecessary burden on our affiliates and the many volunteers upon which the sport relies.
  • Providing information and advice* to help Seafarers run effectively, efficiently and compliantly. (*Including legal advice.)
  • Providing an RYA safety management system of incident reporting, maintaining a comprehensive log of any incidents.
  • Identifying trends and lessons learned and sharing information accordingly through relevant RYA channels and RYA Safety Advisory Notices.
  • Acting as the UK National Governing Body with regard to applying for, and dispersing, public funding to develop participation and performance in the sport. Advising and supporting affiliates with their application to funding bodies and Sports Councils.

RYA Training Centre

Seafarers Sailing Club is an RYA Training Centre. The RYA supplies the training framework, standards, syllabus and development opportunities to deliver safe and successful boating for members to attract, train and retain new members and volunteers.

To ensure compliance with the above, the Club's sailing and powerboat training efforts are overseen by a Training Centre Principal who is appointed by the Club. The Seafarer's RYA Principal is Dick Banks.

Joining Point

The Club encourages its members to consider RYA membership as a benefit to themselves, the Club and the sport in general. Membership helps the RYA in all the work it does on behalf of the recreational boating community. Membership also allows the individual to take advantage of numerous benefits and services.

Seafarers has joined the RYA Joining Point scheme. The scheme rewards organisations such as ours for promoting RYA membership by awarding them a commission for each membership recruited. For more details, go to the Joining Point.

If you decide to join the RYA, please quote the Seafarers RYA reference number, 008101127. This will not affect the fee you pay but will earn the Club commission. This applies whether you apply by phoning the RYA Member Services team on 02380 604159 or using an RYA Membership Application form. Application forms are available in the clubhouse.

If you have any queries, contact David Grout, the Membership Secretary.
