Big Spring Beach Clean a Big Success
Published 13:25 on 17 Apr 2019
The Big Spring Beach Clean is the largest and most effective volunteer beach cleaning project in the UK. The event is co-ordinated by volunteers for Surfers Against Sewage.
The 2019 Spring Beach Clean of Salterns Beach and Park took place on Saturday 13th April. A significant number of Club members took part. Seafarers also provided free refreshments on completion for all participants. The event was a great success in terms of beach cleaning and as a demonstration of community spirit.
Lisa Vincent from Surfers Against Sewage posted the following note on their Facebook page shortly after the Big Beach Clean:
A very big thank you to everyone who turned up to clean Salterns Beach and Park this morning. We had such a great time meeting everyone from Beavers and Sea Scouts to families and couples from overseas! Over 200 people helped out today and we got lots of big bags of rubbish but also managed to recycle a lot of glass and plastic too.
Thanks also to Cliff and Rob from Surfers Against Sewage, Barbara and Angie from Fareham Borough Council, Hill Head Coastguard and Debbie plus volunteers from Seafarers Sailing Club who have all been wonderfully supportive and helpful during this event.
We had some interesting finds today, one which intrigued us was a Creamy Fudge wrapper in excellent condition with an expiry date of 1986! Seconded by a Yorkshire Bitter can from 1987 with the old can style ring top opening (for those who remember).
And finally the results of our brand audit, the worst offenders of litter found are as follows (in order of most litter found);
McDonald's, Cadbury, Mars, Haribo, Coca Cola, Walkers Crisps, Tesco, Highland Spring Water, M&S, KP, Fosters, Nestle, Carlsberg, Pepsi, Co-op, Strongbow, Budweiser, Heinz, Asda, Walls, Lidl, Maynards, Lucozade, Moretti, McVities.... the list goes on and on sadly.
I will be sending the data to SAS who will tally all the numbers from across the cleans this week and remind these manufacturers that they need to do their part to end this packaging problem.
